We hope you can join us tomorrow for our regular meeting at the CSD YMCA at noon, and we’re very excited about our guest speaker, Lance Brockmeier, from Journey Community Caf’e!
Speaker Biography: Lance has been in the greater Charlotte area since 1996 when his work with Sea-Land Service brought him from Dallas, TX. Lance has been in the international logistics industry since 1979 in Savannah, GA, Atlanta, GA, Dallas, and then Charlotte. In late 1999, Lance joined Maersk when that company purchased Sea-Land Service.
Lance graduated from the University of Virginia in 1975, and from Queens University or Charlotte in 2003 with an MBA.
Lance retired from Maersk in April 2016, returning to work with Maersk part-time in January 2019.
Lance is currently the CEO of The Community Cafe which serves about 1,900 meals weekly from two dine-in cafes, three distribution and delivery sites and a food truck. The Community Cafe was started in 2010 by Don Murfin and Kenny Ashley, Pastor of The Journey Church in Lake Wylie. In September 2022, Lance and Constantine Mitsopoulos took over leadership of the all-volunteer Cafe when Don Murfin retired after a long tenure. The Cafe’s mission is to prepare and serve food to those in our community who need it, no questions asked, under our motto, “Neighbors Helping Neighbors So All May Eat.”
Speaker Biography: Mallory Jacobs is the Regional Director of Operations for South Carolina Foster Care at Pinnacle Family Services. Mallory received her Bachelor of Arts in Experimental Psychology from the University of South Carolina (Go Gamecocks!). She continued her education at Winthrop University where she received her Master of Social Work (MSW) degree. Mallory is a Licensed Master Social Worker and is currently undergoing the supervision process to become a Licensed Independent Social Worker – Clinical Practice. Mallory has experience working with Veterans and has been working in the foster care system since May 2022. In her free time, Mallory is likely playing with her two Labs, Simba and Trivette, who she adores and has spoiled rotten.

5k Races on Lake Wylie 10:00 am Sit-In Kayak 10:30 am Sit-On Kayak 11:00 am Paddleboard 11:30 am Youth (2k)
April 15th three adult races will be held. One sit-in kayak, One in a sit-on kayak, and one in paddle boards. These races will cover a 5K course starting at YMCA Camp Thunderbird on Lake Wylie, SC. Racers will paddle south along the shoreline, around Sunrise Point, and head for Pier 88 / River Hills Marina. At the marina, racers will round a turnaround buoy or race committee boat and paddle back along the shoreline, returning to YMCA Camp Thunderbird. The Youth Division (Ages 12-17) will be a combined, sit-in or sit-on kayak, paddle board race. Youth division racers will paddle a 2K course that is within the adult race course, it will start and finish at YMCA Camp Thunderbird. Medals will be given out to the top 3 racers in each division. Depending on your kayak/board and experience, it will take between 50 minutes and an hour and a half to complete the course. This is a great opportunity to get out and enjoy the water and enjoy the day.
Paddle for the Cure is much more than a day of kayak/paddle board races. You do not have to race to come to watch the races or browse the booths at the pavilion. Bring the whole family for live music, food, a silent auction, and children’s activities.
