Lake Wylie Rotary Club Honors Spirit of Service Awards – 2016

The Lake Wylie Rotary Club held its Spirit of Service Scholarship Awards on Thursday night, May 5. After a welcome message from Club President, Ed Lindsey; Elizabeth Hartley, Scholarship Coach,  introduced the 6 Finalists selected for the Spirit of Service Scholarship Awards for 2016.  Three finalists were chosen from the Clover High School Rotary Interact Club and three finalists were chosen based upon their Community Service.  Guests, and members of the Lake Wylie Rotary Club, listened to the presentations of the 6 Student Finalists from the Clover High School which had been selected by a panel of judges. Each student was given the opportunity to make a presentation about their service to the community. A team of Rotarian judges selected the winners.

The club also recognized two other prestigious awards during the event: Unsung Hero; and Rotarian of the Year.

Emily George, $2,000 Scholarship Recipient and Elizabeth Hartley

Emily George, who will enter Auburn University as a Pre-Med student, was awarded one of the top $2,000 scholarship awards. She has a passion for supporting St. Jude which is a leading children’s hospital pioneering research and treatments for kids with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Through her efforts and initiatives, she helped raise over $75,000 for St. Jude’s through the “Moped to Memphis”; Womanless Beauty Pagent; Clover Auto Show; to name a few. She accumulated well over 300 Service Hours.

Bonnie Wyatt, who will attend Duke University Law School and plans on joining the Peace Corps upon graduation. She was awarded the Clover High School Interact Club $2,000 scholarship. Wyatt served as the Clover High School Interact Club President from 2014 – 2016. Bonnie’s desire to give back to the community and help fulfill selected needs, she volunteered at the Clover Area Assistance Center, RideAbility, and Sweet Repeats Thrift Store. This past year, she participated in the Special Olympics and has volunteered for Rideability, which is a program for children with disabilities. She also has plans to continue to play an active role in Rotary at Anderson University in the Rotaract Program.

The decision to the first place Scholarship Award is always a difficult and daunting task for the judges. The four other students; Sean Elder, Arnd Prikker; and Donavon Frazier were each awarded a $500 Scholarship. By all means, these student’s activities were just as impressive and represented a significant contribution to our community.

The Lake Wylie Rotary Club is very proud to award these five outstanding students scholarships who all exemplify the Rotary International Motto of “Service Above Self”. The LWRC is able to provide this opportunity to our local students primarily from the funds raised by the Annual Lake Wylie Poker Run, the Lake Wylie Luau and various fund raisers conducted through the year.
